Talking Politics

September 13, 2017

In a time when political debates are becoming more heated and athletes are being drawn into them, Anton Goff, Athletic Director at St. John's University, encourages his student-athletes to discuss politics, as long as they do so wisely. He recently discussed the issue with The Torch.

“At St. John’s, we recognize that freedom of thought, expression, and speech are intellectual pillars of our University community and key parts of our Vincentian mission to serve those in need both locally and around the world,” Goff said. “In particular, we encourage our student-athletes to openly discuss their views on social issues.”

According to The Torch, many athletes have over a million followers on social media sites, thus giving them large audiences. Some star athletes, such as Colin Kapernick, have spoken out on political issues, and while student-athletes may follow suit, they represent their school by doing so.

As such, Goff said that athletes must consider the long-term ramifications of what they say and do.
