Stevens Point Coach Suspended

January 6, 2017

Following allegations of major NCAA rules violations, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Head Men's Basketball Coach Bob Semling has been suspended for the rest of the 2016-17 academic year.

According to the Journal Sentinel, Semling held practices outside of the season and watched as his players scrimmaged with recruits. In April, an internal investigation by UWSP, acting on a letter from “concerned students,” found that Semling had minor violations of the rules since the 2011-12 academic year, but a few weeks ago, the NCAA informed UWSP that the violations were more severe.

Athletic Director Brad Duckworth announced Semling's suspension on Thursday, at a press conference at UWSP's Health Enhancement Center.

"As an institution, we feel that it is imperative to take swift and immediate action in response to what we have been informed by the NCAA are major allegations regarding our men's basketball program," Duckworth said.

Duckworth said he could not comment on the investigation because of NCAA confidentiality rules, but that he believed his school would not have to vacate any of its wins. The university also barred its team from participating in postseason play in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and canceled three practice days.

Kent Dernbach, Associate Head Coach, will replace Semling for the rest of the season.

"I accept this challenge to uphold the tradition we have at UW-Stevens Point," Dernbach said. "We take pride in the work ethic and integrity of our players on and off the court. We will be resilient and I am confident this team will continue to make our fans, alumni, boosters and parents proud that we are all Pointers."
