Shutting Down Bad Fan Behavior

March 1, 2019

The New Mexico Activities Association has taken a step to curb unruly fan behavior at sporting events which is impacting the number of people who choose to serve as officials at high school games. The NMAA has produced a video to raise awareness about the problem.  Click on the link to watch the video.

"We are at a critical shortage of officials in various sports," wrote J.P. Murrieta, the Sports Information Director for the NMAA. "These officials have chosen to help out athletics by being a part of the game.  We don’t want to lose them.  Encourage positive support and eliminate the negative behavior."

The association has created a campaign called "Compete with Class," with emphasis on Respect, Integrity, Responsibility.

The NBA has conducted a very thorough Code of Conduct for fans at its arenas, containing solid points for athletic departments to consider in developing their own set of rules to curb poor behavior.

Here are some of the key points from the NBA's Code of Conduct:

• Players will respect and appreciate each and every fan.

• Guests will sit only in their ticketed seats and show their tickets when requested.

• Guests will not engage in fighting, throwing objects or attempting to enter the court, and those who engage in any of these actions will immediately be ejected from the game.

• Guests will smoke in designated smoking areas only.

• There will not be any obscene or indecent messages on signs or clothing.

• Guests will comply with requests from arena staff regarding arena operations and emergency response procedures.

And Heritage High School in Lincoln City, Ind., also offers a solid list on its athletic deparetment website:

  • Enthusiastic support of your team
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Family friendly atmosphere
  • Commitment to safety
