Shooting Shortens Game

September 11, 2018

Last Friday night, a shooting during the home football game at Hoover High School, in Des Moines, Iowa, forced an early ending to the contest. According to the Des Moines Register, the shooting took place during the fourth quarter, with about 20 rounds fired in the parking lot.

"We’re thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the senseless incident that happened near Hoover High School on Friday night, and are grateful for the quick response of both our staff and law enforcement," said Phil Roeder, director of communications at Des Moines Public Schools.

Roeder said the district would not talk about details of security, and that police and school resource officers would decide whether to change their routine. Hoover is now working on making up the game against Des Moines North High School, which was interrupted with Hoover ahead 21-18 and two minutes left.

"The activities directors and coaches at Hoover and North are looking at dates and how best to put all of the pieces in place to play a little over two minutes of football,” he said. “When that will take place has not yet been decided.”

According to another story by the Register, Hoover has until October 19 to make up the last two minutes of the game, and if it cannot do so, the score will stand. Todd Tharp, Assistant Director, of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, said completing the game is not mandatory, but he is speaking with both schools to find a time that will work for them.

"I've encouraged them to try to find a date that will work for both schools," Tharp said.
