Scholarships Questioned

October 29, 2018

The Ohio High School Athletic Association placed the girls' basketall team at Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio on probation for violating a recruiting bylaw by giving scholarships to basketball players after they enrolled.

According to my Dayton Daily News, the OHSAA ruled that current students had to relinquish their scholarship monies, and that the school could only continue the scholarship program if the scholarships are awarded regardless of which school the recipients choose.

Lourdes Lambert, Principal of Alter, said that she believed that the “awards” to students were meant to reimburse parents for paying dues to the Junior Lady Knights, and that she believed that the awards, having been in place since 2011, had been approved and were not recruiting. She said the payments were only for basketball players and the money was based on how many seasons the students had participated in JLK.

From New World Of Coaching
Most sports teams have help from a variety of support staff beyond assistant coaches. For coaches fortunate enough to have athletic training coverage, this is one relationship that’s certainly worth investing time in.
