Rhodes Hires Hoeg

May 29, 2018

Portia Hoeg has been named the new executive director of athletics for Rhodes College, effective July 23rd. She comes to Rhodes from Allegheny College in Meadville, Penn., where she served as the director of athletics and recreation for the past six years.
"Portia's accomplishments at Allegheny impressed our search committee. She has proven leadership skills, and I am confident Portia will hit the ground running here at Rhodes," vice president of student Life and chair of the search committee Dr. Russ Wigginton said.
At Allegheny, Hoeg oversaw 23 varsity sports, clubs, and recreational programs, in addition to serving on the Allegheny Administrative Executive Committee (AEC), which is directed by the president.
"I would like to thank Dr. Hass, Dr. Wigginton and the search committee for this tremendous opportunity. From the moment I stepped on campus I was in awe of its beauty and the dynamic community members I had the opportunity to interact with during the interview process. I am beyond excited to join an institution of Rhodes' caliber that unequivocally supports an athletics program that is on an upward trajectory. I look forward to building on this momentum with the staff, coaches and student-athletes, while entrenching my family and I into both the campus and Memphis communities," Hoeg said.
During her time at Allegheny, Hoeg also oversaw the enhancement of multiple facilities on the college's campus, including complete renovations of the athletic training center and the football locker room.
"I first met Portia years ago when we served on a NCAA DIII Management Council together. I knew then that she was a rising star in college athletic administration. I'm so pleased that Portia rose to become Rhodes' first choice through a national search," Rhodes College president Dr. Marjorie Hass said.
Prior to joining Allegheny, Hoeg was the associate athletic director at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., from 2008 to 2012, and the assistant athletic director at the college from 2005 to 2008. She served as the interim assistant director of athletics at Vassar College from 2004 to 2005.
Hoeg received her bachelor's degree in marketing and management from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, before earning her master's in business administration from North Park University in Chicago, Ill.
She has served on several boards and participated in multiple organizations, including the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators, the NCAC Branch Rickey Mentorship Program, and the NCAA National Leadership Selection Committee. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and has volunteered time and served on the board for the Crawford County for Big Brothers and Sisters.
