Officials Crisis Causes Rescheduling

September 12, 2018

Due to a lack of officials for varsity football games in the Michigan High School Athletic Association, some schools have been forced to reschedule their games.

According to, mlive.com, Hillsdale played Erie-Maxson on Saturday morning of the third week of the season, as a result of not having enough officials for all the games that Friday night. The week after that, two other Cascades Conference games had to be moved.

"It's not ideal but I understand, there's obviously a ref shortage so we're just trying to make the best of the situation," Troy Allen, Michigan Center's coach, said. "We're trying to look at it as another day to prepare. Might mix up our practice schedule a little bit and try to make a negative into a positive is our approach."

Allen said he was trying to be optimistic about the development.

"We've tried to put a twist on it that if we make a bit of a run in the playoffs that we could play a Saturday day game sometime," Allen said. "Is that realistic for us? We can't be sure, but that's the mentality we're going with."

Chad Patrick, Athletic Director for the Cardinals, said that adjusting to the new schedule could be difficult for all involved, and it makes arranging transportation challenging.

"Thankfully we have good people in place, so we're fortunate that way," Patrick said. "We were able to get it lined up."
