NYIT Opens Esports Arena

December 6, 2018

NYIT continued to distinguish itself in the collegiate eSports world on Tuesday.

With high-ranking administrators from throughout the university on hand, the CyBears held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new eSports arena inside Wisser Library.

The arena, which boasts 14 souped-up computers with GTX 1080 TI graphics cards as well as 70-inch monitors for spectators to follow the action, will be open to the general student body when NYIT's eSports team is not practicing or competing.

The room is also equipped with state-of-the-art OPSeat and Vertagear gaming chairs.

"You can get some matches in while you're waiting for another class to start," CyBears coach and NYIT alum Elieser Duran said. "Or if you have some time, or a class got canceled, you can come and play."

The CyBears already boast 42 student-athletes competing in Overwatch, League of Legends, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, Rainbow 6 Siege and Smash Brothers (Melee/Ultimate).

They routed Molloy College on Sunday in Overwatch in the first-ever eSports competition at Nassau Coliseum.

As for the general student body, Duran is planning to partner with the NYIT Athletics' recreation staff to hold Madden and FIFA tournaments in the spring.

"These are computers specifically for gaming," Duran said. "We have 14 in here, and we can project to the screens outside."

NYIT has been in the forefront in catering to its students' interest in gaming. In fact, the university — renowned for its technology — is now allowing students to build their own majors that combine game-design and technology classes with business and other disciplines. That will put graduates in position to succeed in a gaming market that soon should exceed $1 billion in annual revenue.

"This grew out of a want that students had," athletic director Dan Vélez said. "They came from our gaming club looking for a more competitive and organized platform to compete. We listened as an administration and launched the CyBears. Here we are with the next step in opening this arena."
