NMAA May Ban Fans

February 6, 2019

The New Mexico Activities Association recently sent a letter to Estancia High School Athletic Director Stewart Burnett, informing him that if there are any more reports of bad behavior at basketball games, all Estancia fans could be banned for the rest of the season.

According to KRQE, the letter mentions that multiple fans have been ejected from games for abusive and threatening behavior toward officials. Burnett said that while his school takes fans' behavior seriously, he had anticipated the letter.

"I knew that like I said [we] had a couple incidents that kinda piled up on each other, and I knew we were probably getting close to the NMAA intervening and getting involved," Burnett said.

Burnett said the incidents are "just a couple issues, very isolated very small representation of our fan base," rather than being indicative of the entire community's character. Despite that, he said he would have a greater administrative presence at the rest of the season's home game, and believes that the warning will encourage the fans to behave.

"I feel very confident like I said that we as a community will rise to the occasion and we're not going to cross that bridge," Burnett said.

Burnett said that banning fans from the games would cost the school $10,000 in revenue, and the athletic department would not recover for years.

"It's a very serious deal for us," Burnett said.
