Marietta Forfeits Wins

July 25, 2018

The Marietta (Ga.) High School football team has forfeited all eight of its victories in 2017 as a result of the team having two ineligible student-athletes on the roster.

According to, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) received a tip in June, and ordered the school to investigate it. The school investigation found that the two players were the children of the high school's employees, and attended under a policy that allowed school employees' children to attend. Wendy Halloran, who reported on this story, obtained documents showing that the eligibility coordinator did not complete the forms, and her supervisor did not properly review them.

"The adults who made the decision should be penalized because the kids had nothing to do with it," Lisa Reliford said.

The GHSA ruled that because Marietta played two ineligible players, it must forfeit all of the games in which the two players participated. The school was also fined $1,500 and the Athletic Director has resigned.

“It’s kind of interesting how they knew about this but they didn’t do anything about it,” Lisa Simpson said. “You know, the kids may or may not have known about it but if they didn’t know about it, now they have to forfeit their whole season so it’s kind of terrible for them."

A spokesperson from the GHSA declined to comment, saying that it does not comment on ongoing investigations, and the school has the right to appeal. The school released a statement saying that one student lived in the attendance zone at the time of enrollment and later moved out, while the other never lived there.
