Long Hours, Low Wages

July 13, 2016

High school coaches often aren’t usually in the profession for the money. In Florida, however, high school football coaches are seeing a particularly difficult financial situation.

According to an article from the St. Augustine Record, football coaches at some of Florida’s public high schools haven’t received a raise since 1986. This is partly due to the teachers’ unions not including supplemental pay raises in their contract negotiations and partly due to the competitiveness of filling positions.

For those who are already serving as coaches, the job could be considered a labor of love that pays an average of $4,382.98 for their effort. With an average annual coaching workload of 900 hours, that breaks down to a rate of less than $5 per hour—without perks for performance.

As a result, many have taken positions in other states, such as Georgia, where coaching has better financial rewards. Others have left the field in order to spend more time with their families.

“The time away from my children wore on me,” Derek Chipoletti, former head football coach at Oakleaf High School, told the Record. “To put in all that time, to go 10-0 and three rounds deep in the playoffs [in 2014] and all my principal can do is pat me on the back and shake my hand. There’s not a bonus for that. And that’s not their fault. But it turned into a realization the rest of my life was going to be like that. My wife and I discussed it and we weren’t interested in moving to Alabama or Georgia, or me taking a chance at college football. I knew getting in I was never going to be a millionaire with what I was doing. But on top of that, I was never home either.”
