Lacrosse Program Cleared

February 6, 2019

Fresno State University has released the results of an independent investigation of its women's lacrosse program. According to The Fresno Bee, it did not find any evidence that its coach, Jessica Giglio, broke rules or created a negative environment for athletes.

“We have received the final independent investigatory report which found no violations of NCAA rules and no evidence of mistreatment of our student-athletes,” Terry Tumey, Athletic Director, said. “We will continue to support coach Jessica Giglio as our head coach and together will be focused on providing positive championship experiences for our student-athletes.”

Rick Evrard, Melisa Meyler and Jason Montgomery, all members of the law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King, conducted the investigation and released a summary report on January 25.

Several complaints from former players and parents had accused Giglio of treating student-athletes unfairly, ethnic discrimination, mental abuse, and failing to monitor the health and safety of the members of the lacrosse team. The report said that the investigation had not found any evidence that Giglio had engaged in bullying or caused a hostile environment in the team.

Giglio said that the administration had not given her enough support for some areas, causing high turnover among her strength and conditioning staff and a limited travel budget.

“From the beginning, I believed that this thorough independent review of the Fresno State women’s lacrosse program would find no NCAA or university violations,” Giglio said. “With this process now complete, I am excited to focus all time, efforts and energy on this 2019 team. We are moving forward with our sights set on this season that opens at home on Sunday.”
