Growing Your Web Site During the Summer

April 22, 2019

Very soon the school sports season will be over, and the long summer break begins. It's obviously the most dormant period for college and high school athletics.

The summer is hardly a time to take a break in adding content to your athletic department website. If you stop putting new copy and images on your site, and promoting the new content through social media, you are wiping out any growth that your site achieved during this school year and will be working in the fall to regain what you've lost.

So how do you add content to your site in the summer when there are no games or events taking place? An article by Brenda Barron on ThemeBoy provides ideas for generating information to place on your site while your teams are off.

Feature fans wearing your team apparel from your school and place the photos on the site. Ask fans to take photos of themselves wearing team apparel, with the offer that you'll place the best photos on your site. You can even make it a contest and and give away prizes from sponsors.

Write about your coaches or athletes who appear at local charity event or volunteer community services. The article suggested the idea of having representatives from your athletic department discuss the “benefits of being physically active and involved with sports, share training strategies, as well as advice on monitoring their progress.”

Manage social media conversations that are hosted on your site. Listen to what fans and supporters are discussing related to your school or teams, and pose questions for community members to provide their thoughts and insights.

Update fans about off-season activities through a weekly or monthly blog. Keep track of what your staff and athletes are doing during the summer that would be of interest to your supporters.

Discuss what other sports teams in the are are doing, as it relates to your teams. The greatest benefit of this is that, if done correctly, you'll have the opportunity to attract fans from those schools or teams to your site and hopefully build new followers.
