Going Viral

April 26, 2015

The following article appears in the April/May 2015 issue of Athletic Management.

It’s not every day that an athletic director reaches Internet stardom. But Grand Forks (N.D.) District Athletic Director Mark Rerick did just that through a simple post.

Last year, Rerick began writing a blog called “High School Sports Stuff” as a way to reach out to the community. Updating his entry log at least once per week, Rerick had developed a small online following of coaches and parents in town. But his blog never reached large numbers.

That all changed with his entry titled, “One Sport Athletes,” which criticized sport specialization over multi-sport participation. Rerick’s post includes a chart showing the number of Ohio State University football recruits who were high school multi-sport athletes and reveals that many college coaches prefer players who don’t limit themselves to one team.

His thoughts initiated over one million Facebook shares, as well as 457 comments and 24,000 Tweets.

But more relevant to Rerick is that it started meaningful discussions. “Within our town, it might be hard for parents who don’t know me to come up and chat,” he says. “What happened is that the many comments ignited important conversations within our community.

“I have dedicated time on my calendar to write this blog in order to address some of the concerns facing youth athletics today,” Rerick continues. “The only way things change is by sharing ideas, which can lead to open discussions.”
