Fundraiser that Takes the Cake

April 15, 2019

Looking for a different type of fundraiser for your athletic team or athletic department? Consider conducting a Cake Auction.

Muscatine High School in Iowa holds an annual Cake Auction, which Athletic Director Mike Morgan described in an article on the VoiceofMuscatine.com in the following manner: “Until you experience it the first time, you don’t fully understand it.”

Morgan attributed the inspiration for the MHS Cake Auction to a similar event the Muskie basketball team saw at North Scott High School in Iowa. “However, Muscatine truly latched onto the idea of having a cake auction and took it to the next level. What started as a small, straightforward fundraiser grew into a local legend,” the article stated.

In February, both businesses that make cakes and non-commercial bakers dropped off entries for the aution. The organizers of the event chose 20 to auction off live during the a home basketball game doubleheader: five to sell during each halftime, and 10 that were sold through a bid process between games.

The remaining seventy-five or so cakes were then used in a silent auction that lasted the length of both basketball games.

The amount of money generated from the Cake Auction generated a significant amount of money to be in covering expenses for the Muscatine High School Athletic Department. At the end of the night, community members walked away with almost 100 unique cakes, and the Muskie Boosters raised a tidy sum of money to put towards athletic expenses throughout the rest of the school year.

“it’s one of my favorite times of the year,” Morgan said in the article. Future Muskies, current Muskies, and past Muskies all come together and celebrate, and it’s an awesome time.”

If you are interested in holding a Cake Auction as a fundraiser at your school, the following article on FundraiserInsight.org provides valuable tips, including:

• Having a guest baker or dessert chef hold a baking demonstration or a presentation at the event.

• Add the sale of baking dishes, utensils, cookie dough, frozen pie crust preserves, etc. to your event to increase revenue.

• Ask the bakers to provide a list of ingredients and recipe instructions along with the cake they provide. Not only will it enhance the value of the cake during the auction process, but you might selling the recipe to other event participants for a small cost to increase the potential revenue that you can generate.
