Finding Superpowers

January 7, 2019

Student-athletes at Northeast High School in Oakland Park, Fla., were visited by members of the Student ACES organization, who taught them character building and leadership in an “Unleashing Your Superpowers”-themed training session.

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Buck Martinez, co-founder of Student ACES, said the theme of the session was to help those present understand what they were capable of.

“The first thing we talk about is what is a superpower?” Martinez said. “The intent was to get kids to think deep about the intangible assets that define who they are. Usually their first response when asked about their superpower abilities was they can run fast or jump high or throw a baseball. As we progressed through the session, they came to realize that their superpowers could be qualities like compassion, to be influential or to drive passion into the mission they choose to pursue.”

Donnell Bennett, a Kansas City Chiefs running back, led part of the session.

“One of the key takeaways we want kids to learn from this program is to be motivated wherever you are at a stage in life to identify the things that make you great,” Bennett said. “Sometimes your superpower is the ability to say the right words at the right time. The right words can build you up or take you down.”

Martinez said that he wanted to reach out to as many student-athletes as possible, and thanked Northeast High School for hosting him.

“Finding partners like FPL that understand the value of investing in the next generation of leaders allows us to duplicate our success in additional counties in Florida and provides an opportunity to reach a greater number of students,” Martinez said. “I applaud Northeast High School and its athletic director, Andrea Mele, for their proactive approach to developing leaders and instilling character education into all their sports teams.”
