Fees Reduced

August 9, 2018

The Harvard (Ill.) Community Unit School District 50's Board of Education has voted to lower athletic and activity fees for the next school year.

According to the Northwest Herald, athletic and music fees for high school students were reduced from $125 to $75, and the fees for middle schoolers were reduced from $60 to $40. Current District 50 students may attend athletic events for free.

Andrew Walters, who became Athletic Director last month, said he hoped to increase participation in athletics and other extracurricular activities.

“That was one of the first things I looked at when I was interviewing for this job: What are we charging?” Walters said. “Now, we’re going to have $75 for two sports, and the third sport – if they’re a three-sport athlete – is free.”

Walters said that the school's athletics and extracurriculars offer “valuable experiences,” and he hoped cost wouldn't serve as a deterrent to participating in them.

“I just think it’s a big thing to not have to worry about finances to have your kid playing or participating in a school environment,” Walters said.
