Delaware Opens The Barn

September 5, 2018

At the start of the football season, the University of Delaware introduced a new student-only tailgating area known as “The Barn.”

According to The Review, The Barn, named for the school's origins as an agricultural school, can house 2,000 students and has food, drinks, music, dancing space, and lawn games, as well as a bar for those 21 and older. Students can enter after scanning their student IDs.

Adam Cantley, Interim Dean of Students, said the Barn was established to disprove the assumption that Delaware students were not allowed to tailgate.

“Students have always been able to tailgate at Delaware Football games,” Cantley said. “I think that was a big cultural misconception that people couldn’t tailgate here.”

Hannah Sirdofsky, Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Engagement, said The Barn was meant to increase school spirit on campus.

“I think it’s going to be a great asset to the student body,” Sirdofsky said. “I’ve had a lot of students come up to me and say that ‘we want to come to games, but we don’t feel like there is anywhere for students to go,’ and the whole point of this space is that it’s completely student-centric, there’s no alums, no season ticket holders. College is about coming and meeting new people and building that sense of school spirit and establishing yourself here in the UD community, and this is one way to do that.”

About 1,200 students came to The Barn during the season opener. Stephen MacDonald, a senior, said the Barn was a welcome addition to the University of Delaware.

“It feels really good because they are trying to make it more fan friendly here at Delaware Stadium,” MacDonald said. “So it feels good to finally have our own student section where we can have fun and hang out with our friends before games.”
