Coverage Now Optional

June 29, 2018

In New Iberia, La., the Iberia Parish School Board has voted not to provide a blanket sports coverage option for insurance in the 2018-19 school year.

According to The Daily Iberian, last year, the board required parents to purchase the supplemental insurance policy if their children participated in sports. On the recommendation of Carmel Norris of Norris Insurance Consultants, the board discontinued the “All Sports Plan Blanket,” this year.

After the plan's cancellation, parents are responsible for their own coverage, but may buy a supplemental plan from the district. Dana Dugas, School Board President, said the school did not want to force those who had insurance to have to buy the supplemental plan.

“The only thing we did is that we made it nonmandatory. It’s voluntary,” Dugas said.

Bobby Norris said that while the supplemental policy worked well as a secondary policy, it did not work well when some people had to use it as a primary policy, resulting in premiums going up.

“It got to the point where it was so expensive,” Norris said. “It was really the smartest thing to do for the board (not to provide the coverage) because it was not going to be as good of a coverage plan as before,” he said.
