Conference Moves

February 6, 2019

Ever since Wichita State left the Missouri Valley Conference and joined the American Athletic Conference, the school's athletic department's revenue and expenses have both risen significantly.

According to The Wichita Eagle, the school's athletic department reported more than $33 million in revenue and almost $32 million in expenses during the 2017-18 academic year, resulting in a $1.37 million surplus.

The Shockers' media rights revenue declined significantly last year, with them receiving $779,512 in media rights and NCAA and conference distributions in 2017-18, as opposed to $1.15 million each of the previous four years. This is because WSU will not receive shares from the AAC's current deal, which will expire after the 2019-20 season, for the first three seasons, since WSU was not a member when the deal was first made.

WSU believes that the surplus will rise in the future. After having paid $2.5 million to the AAC in lieu of five installments of $500,000, it will pay $75,000 per year, but will earn a portion of the conference's media rights for AAC's next contract.

Moving to the AAC resulted in men's basketball ticket sales rising 25 percent in 2017-18, resulting in $4.51 million in sales. The men's basketball team generated $8.59 million in revenue, a significant portion of the $22.37 million in revenue not designated for one sport. WSU also received $12.19 million in contributions, $2 million more than the previous year.

Expenses rose as a result of the move. Travel expenses went up 38 percent compared to the previous year, increasing to $3.24 million. The recruiting budget increased 33 percent, to a total of more than $578,000. Marketing expenses also rose 33 percent, up to $3.33 million.
