Bridging Gaps

March 6, 2018

As the spring season approaches, Madison (Neb.) High School's coaches and administrators have been making visits to student-athletes' homes. According to The Washington Times, Reid Ehrisman, Athletic Director, said that his coaches visited about three-fifths of their spring season athletes at home to talk about expectations, practices, and schedules.

He said the visits were an important way of bridging gaps between American and Hispanic cultures, especially since four fifths of Madison students are Hispanic.

“No one else is doing anything like this in a public school,” said Ehrisman. “But our needs are different at Madison.”

Casey Wolta, who coaches boys' soccer, said the Madison student-athletes' families were glad to get the visits.

“Not only were students excited, but their little siblings and family were excited, too,” Wolta said. “We don’t get to meet the parents and families very often.”

They will continue the visits in the fall sports season.

“Many families aren’t taking their kids to the (YMCA) every weekend,” Ehrisman said. “We’re trying to promote and instill the value of sport into our students and families.”
