Bill Would Allow Guns

February 8, 2017

A Wyoming state legislature bill that would allow people to conceal firearms at college sports events has resulted in conerns for Tom Burman, Athletic Director of the University of Wyoming, as reported by the Casper Star-Tribune.

“The additional challenges caused by the legislation in other states bring up concerns about what could potentially happen in this state,” Burman said.

The bill, House Bill 136, was approved by the House 40-19 and now is in the state senate. House members who voted on it argue that it would make colleges safer. If Wyoming passes the bill, it will join nine other states with similar laws allowing concealed weapons.

Burman said that this law could potentially cause people from outside the state to feel unsafe.

“... I was concerned officials may say, ‘I’m not coming to Laramie,’” Burman said. “I’m not worried about that now, but having said that, I’m opposed to a concealed weapon law that would allow people to bring weapons into War Memorial Stadium and Arena-Auditorium.”

The University of Wisconsin conducted a survey on the issue. Of 936 people polled, 47.6 percent oppose allowing concealed weapons on campus, 48.7 percent support it, and about 3.6 percent said they are unsure.
