Adding Cheer, Stunt

July 25, 2017

The Hiram College Athletics Department, and Director of Athletics Ellen Dempsey, are pleased to announce the addition of Cheer & STUNT as the Terrier's 16th intercollegiate sport.

"The addition of women's Cheer & STUNT is part of a larger vision for the future of Hiram College and the Department of Athletics," said Director of Athletics, Ellen Dempsey. "We are committed to offering a broad based athletic program and look forward to the addition of Cheer & STUNT.

College STUNT was established in 2010 as a newly developed sport format for cheerleading. The new competitive team sport removes the crowd-leading and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, which include partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling skills.

The fastest growing female sport in the country, USA Cheer created STUNT as an opportunity for colleges, universities and high schools to meet Title IX requirements. With more than 500,000 high school cheerleaders throughout the country, STUNT expands the opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level.

The competitive STUNT schedule takes place during the spring semester, with the squad focusing on more of a traditional cheerleading role throughout the fall and winter sport seasons.

Following the model set forth by the Hiram men's volleyball program, which begins its first full year of varsity action during the 2017-18 calendar year, the competitive STUNT program will have one year in which it will operate as a club sport before undertaking a full varsity schedule in 2018-19. Additionally, a nationwide search for the Terriers inaugural Cheer and STUNT coach is underway.
