Police Presence

January 29, 2015

At Boynton Beach Community (Fla.) High School, student-athletes are winning both bills of an off-the-field doubleheader--giving back to their community while simultaneously raising money for their teams. In a collaborative program called "Play it Forward," which began this past summer, athletes from various sports come together to assist local non-profit organizations, and the local police department rewards them for their time through donations to the high school's athletic program.

With an eye on academic aptitude, the police offer an hourly figure based on the student-athletes' GPAs. "If a student has a 3.5 GPA and works one hour, our school gets $3.50," explains Boynton Beach Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Lyndon Clemons, "It's a great opportunity, a chance for the kids to get together, and a nice source of income. The police have promised $15,000 for the year--every little bit counts."

Clemons oversees the operation, often serving as the liaison between students and volunteer sites. He is especially proud of the athletes' work with Habitat for Humanity. This fall, for example, they are helping with the construction of an affordable housing project.

"The kids are taking time out to work together," Clemons says. "They'll finish these projects in the community and they will see what they've accomplished when they walk past them every day. They'll say, 'Hey, there's the house I helped build. That's the neighborhood I helped clean-up.' It's refreshing."
