New Surface Floors UTEP

Case Study

When it comes to making changes at the University of Texas at El Paso's Don Haskins Center--named for the legendary basketball coach whose 1966 national championship-winning team was the inspiration behind the film Glory Road--there is a lot of history to consider. Fortunately, the longstanding relationship between UTEP and Robbins Sports Surfaces made the recent selection and installation of the Bio-Channel Classic surface an easy and positive process.
A proven model by Robbins, the Bio-Channel Classic combines the structural and dimensional stability of an anchored flooring system with the safety and comfort of resilient sports flooring. This surface was used in the Don Haskins Center before, and the facilities team found it to be so beneficial, they ordered a second one.

"Our previous Bio-Channel Classic floor was selected by former Head Men's Basketball Coach Kenneth Sadler and former Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Mack Rhoades," says Mike Spence, UTEP's Director of Special Facilities Management. "They went to the Robbins test facility and looked at various models--deciding the Bio-Channel Classic floor best fit our needs."

After UTEP decided on a model, familiarity with Robbins and the company's dealer, Barry Stout of Stout Hardwood, made the installation of the new surface a breeze. "We have always had a Robbins floor, and Barry Stout has been our floor guy for more than 20 years," says Spence. "Robbins has been responsive to our needs and has delivered materials in a timely manner.

"Barry has always been great to work with," Spence continues. "His work is the best, and he takes care of our needs, including touch-up paint or repairs as needed. He comes down whenever we call and is able to answer all of our questions."

With the installation completed, UTEP's eye-catching new gym floor is getting rave reviews. "Compared to other playing surfaces, it is above average," says Spence. "Everyone likes it."

That includes current Head Men's Basketball Coach Tim Floyd, who thinks the new home court does the Miners proud. "The new floor in the Don Haskins Center looks terrific and has been a big hit with our fans and players," he says. "It has really brightened up the whole arena. We have had a relationship with Robbins Sports Surfaces for many years, and their work has always been first class."
